From Learner to Community Safety Advocate: Dayalyn’s Journey of Empowerment
Dayalyn Tena, an Indigenous resident of Village of Masla, Barangay Sablang, considers the knowledge and skills she gained through the project as one of its most valuable contributions to her life and community.
Before participating in the program, Dayalyn had limited knowledge of disaster preparedness and the proper use of emergency equipment. Through the trainings and capacity-building activities provided by the project, she learned practical skills that are essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of her family and community. More importantly, she gained a deeper understanding of the importance of preparedness and the basic needs required to protect lives during emergencies.
As a member of an Indigenous community, Dayalyn values the opportunity to continuously expand her knowledge and share what she has learned with others. She expressed her gratitude for the support provided through the project, particularly for the equipment and resources that were distributed to community members. What once seemed unfamiliar and difficult to use has now become a valuable tool that she can confidently apply in real-life situations.
Dayalyn believes that the project has not only strengthened her personal capacity but has also enabled her to contribute to the safety and resilience of her community by passing on her knowledge to fellow residents. She hopes that the support and guidance provided by the project team will continue in the future so that community members can further develop their skills and preparedness.
Reflecting on her experience, Dayalyn shared her heartfelt appreciation to the project implementers for investing in their community and helping Indigenous peoples become more informed, prepared, and resilient in the face of disasters. Through the project, she has gained the confidence to take an active role in promoting safety and preparedness within her community
